Mennonite (?) Egg Rolls - Gluten Free

I haven't had a Chinese egg roll in a very long time and hardly remember how they taste - I just remember that I liked them !
I looked at some regular recipes and came up with my own gluten-free version.
We enjoyed them this evening with Anneliese's 'Chicken Chow Mein' - substituting white rice noodles for the wheat ones .
So here is my recipe -- a bit of work to prepare but I thought it worth it.

Egg Roll Filling
  • 10 oz of Mennonite Farmer sausage crumbled (this is the Mennonite part- smile) or use ground pork
  • 1/2 cup of shredded cabbage
  • 1/2 cup of chopped carrots
  • 1/2 cup of chopped green pepper
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp gf soya sauce
  • 1 tbsp molasses
  • salt, pepper (as desired)
  • oil
  1. panfry the sausage or pork in a little oil .. until it is no longer pink
  2. add the vegetables and stirring... cook for several minutes
  3. mix the cornstarch, soya sauce and molasses and pour over the meat/veggie mixture
  4. cook for a couple more minutes
  5. remove from heat and cool
Wrappers
  • 1/2 cup white corn flour
  • 1/4 cup brown rice flour
  • 1/2 cup tapioca starch
  • 1/2 cup potato starch
  • 1/2 tsp xanthan gum
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup ice water
  1. mix dry ingredients together
  2. whisk egg into ice water
  3. pour liquids over flour mix and stir, then knead into a smooth ball
  4. cover dough with plastic wrap or in a ziplock bag and let it rest for 1/2 - 1 hour
  5. roll dough out fairly thin , and cut into 3 x 4 inch pieces.
  6. add filling making a ridge along the center of each dough piece and fold dough over to make a roll
  7. heat oil and deep fry the rolls until they are golden .
  8. Serve them hot with sweet and sour sauce
Sweet and Sour Sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp real lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 2 tbsp soya sauce
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  1. mix all ingredients in a small sauce pan and cook until mixture bubbles and thickens.
(I warmed these rolls in the microwave the next day and they were great! )

  1. I had a guest to my house that was celiac. She told me that farmer sausage has gluten in it. I assume from this recipe that you disagree.

  2. Lorrie, Yes...I do disagree. I have no trouble buying gf farmer sausage.... but we do always need to read labels.
The Winkler Mennonite farmer sausage has Gluten Free written across the packaging. Rempel's Farmer sausage which is very popular here in the Fraser Valley is also gluten free.

  7. These sound amazing! Although I don't need g-f recipes I often blog recipes that are, and have friends who need them. I must try the wrapper recipe. If I do and use it in my blog, I will of course link it back here. I don't think we can get your mennonite sausages here in Scotland, and I don't really eat meat, but I'll put my thinking cap on. Probably marinate some tofu and bake tiny cubes for including. Thanks for the tip.

  8. I don't have celiac disease, just gluten sensitivity. I don't have to worry too much about cross contamination, but I like to check the ingredients, just in case. I am really happy that there are so many recipes on the net. Some 10-15 years ago, there was not much information about gluten-free foods. Fortunately, things got better. Nowadays, there are more and more restaurants that specialize in gluten-free cuisine. I can call myself lucky because there are quite a few such eateries in Toronto. Hibiscus CafĂ© is my favourite one. However, I cannot afford to eat there every day. Therefore, I try to find gluten-free ingredients at stores and cook at home as often as possible. It saves me a lot of money. Thank you for the recipe, I´ll definitely try this one.

    1. Interesting! I have never found it at Superstore... I buy mine at Alder Health in Aldergrove. That is the only place I have found it.
I'll have to ask for it at Superstore... maybe if some stores carry it other store could bring it in if asked!
