Bread for the Journey

John 15: 9-12
The Living Bible

How do you read your Bible?
Reading the Bible is a very personal thing.
We all have our own way of reading it, the version we prefer,
and the time of day we sit back to read His word
and listen to what God is saying.

When I was a young Christian,
there were times that the Bible just did not make any sense to me.
I felt like it was written in a way that I just could not understand.
Have you ever felt that?

I would strongly encourage you to find a Bible
with a text or translation that makes the most sense to you.
It may be a modern day version like
"The Message", "New International Version" ,
or the poetry of the traditional version of the Old King James .
Look here to find out what version is best for you to understand.
Instead of just reading the Bible on line it is best
to have a Bible you can hold in your hands to read,
write notes, underline, mark it up so it becomes the road map of your life.

My favorite version is the Bible
that my parents gave to me when I was 14.
"The Living Bible"
It is true that any version of the Bible is the living word of God.
A love letter to you,
a guide to daily living
a word of encouragement and hope.
Don't be afraid to mark up the Bible and highlight
the verses that are meaningful to you
.

When our children went into grade 7,
they received a new student Bible.
We had our family and friends mark up the pages and highlight verses,
write in the side margins of why this verse was important to them.
That way when they started to read the Bible for them selves,
these verses would jump out at them and give a chance to read
the words that are meaningful to the people in their life,
and perhaps make it meaningful to them as well.
It also encouraged them to mark up this sacred book
and make it more personal for themselves.

My prayer for you this morning is that you have a stirring with in you
to read God's word, mark up the book and make it personal,
so that you too would learn for yourself that

God loves you with an undying love, which he proved giving us
His son Jesus Christ.

  6. Oh how I LOVE these scriptures! :) I am so thankful for the Holy Spirit to bless me to understand the words of the scriptures as I am ready for them. I especially love proverbs, psalms, and all stories of a symbolic nature, especially those told by Christ.

    Have a happy day!

  7. I agree with ellen b.- such a wonderful way to mentor our children, who will remember those who marked passages long after their birthdays! It is kind of like having favourite recipes, handwritten, or in books that are spotted and crusty with batter- so easy to find the favourites and be transported back, or to transcend what is troubling you... Blessings to you and your followers, as we all follow the One who created us, through the example of His Son and disciples.

  8. I have marked my Bibles since I was young and now in my older years as I have to sit more often, I am enjoying going thru my and my parents older Bibles and often find I have the same verses underlined in my latest own personal Bible. I now put dates beside them tho and comments bout the present trial or request-I too love the Psalms and Proverbs and get thru them each year with many dates and scruffy pages from all the markings BUT I so enjoy seeing where the Lord has answered prayer or what He has brought me thru as I read the margin markings. Soooo thankful for Beth Moore who I discovered about ll years ago as she has made the teachings of the Scriptures become more Active and Alive in me as I read daily claiming His precious promises. I just finished my 2nd year with her blog an a team of about 1,500 women - we have all memorized and can say in entirety our 24 verses of the year- signed in with our own verses from the Lord every 2 weeks. Sooo beneficial to have His Word tucked into my heart and mind as I go thurout the day dealing with different circumstances and in my prayers. Praying you all too will fall in love with His Word. Sooooo profound and life-changing. Thanks for this Sunday encouragement. Love to you all.

  12. I had always kept my Bible in pristine condition. It is the Living Bible...a gift to our family from my Mom and Dad one Christmas. My husband passed away and the kids left home and one day, the thought came to me that it was my book and I started marking favorite passages.I still have the Bible that I received when I joined the Church as a youth. The Psalms and Proverbs are a couple of my favorite books. Very interesting post telling about our Bibles.

  13. Very good post. What I wanted to say is I made the chocolate cake with Cherry Pie Filling and mini marshmallows. Oh so very delish. My husband said it was so moist. I put Cool Whip on my piece but he does not like it so ate it plain. A great recipe and I will share with my family & friends. Thanks.
And this is not the first recipe I have tried and enjoyed.
Personally I read the NIV Bible. As a child I had King James but that was 80 years ago. Not much choice back then.

  14. I wrote a blog about my bible being an old friend awhile ago (http://oasisofone.blogspot.com/2011/03/old-friend.html) and when I mentioned to a woman that I know that I mark my Bible she was aghast. That response had never even occurred to me. I then wrote a little of her journey here: http://oasisofone.blogspot.com/2011/10/too-holy-to-touch.html. Thanks once again for your ‘bread for the journey’.

  17. I love this post! When I was in school I was severely punished for 'trashing' my Bible -because I used it as an active notebook.

There is a generation that is against writing in the margin. Not me. Now I'm an adult I still actively use and think and highlight the Word.

    Bibles are for using.
    Not for dusting.

  18. Hello, I love your writing. I just say,"The Bible stands like a mountain towering
    Far above the works of men;
Its truth by none ever was refuted,
And destroy it they never can.

The Bible stands, and it will forever
    When the world has passed away;
By inspiration it has been given,
All its precepts I will obey." Best of luck!!
