Lettuce Wraps

We have a wonderful Chinese food restaurant in our town where one of my favorite menu items is their lettuce wrap.  When I found a recipe that looked similar, I decided to give it a try. I will be making this dish again and again!



Lettuce Wraps
  • 1 large head iceberg lettuce
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 red pepper, finely diced
  • 1 green pepper, finely diced
  • 2 carrots, finely diced
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 or 3 cups steam fried noodles
  • 1 bottle hoisin sauce
    1. Core head of lettuce. Hold upside down under cold, running water...gently pull the leaves away from the core, one at a time. Each leaf will from a natural cup. Remove excess water from leaves...and chill in refrigerator until needed.
    2. Brown ground beef in heavy skillet. Add ginger, garlic, peppers, carrot and onion. Fry until veggies are tender. Add the steam fried noodles and cook for 2-3 minutes longer (noodles should still be crunchy). Transfer mixture to serving platter.
    3. Place platter on table, alongside a plate of lettuce leaves and bowl of hoisin sauce. To serve, allow each person to spoon a portion of the meat into a lettuce leaf...top with hoisin sauce. Wrap the lettuce around the meat like a burrito, and enjoy!
    Cooks notes: The hoisin sauce can be found in the Asian section of the grocery store. It's what gives the flavour, so it is not optional!

      but I'm worried about the hoisin sauce..if it is gluten-free.

      Ohh .. I just checked and Dynasty Hoisin sauce is gluten-free as well as the Kame brand!

      Try adding water chestnuts. They add a real nice crunch.

    9. this is my daughters new favorite all time meal! I have made it twice in the past two weeks. I refuse to buy iceberg lettuce because of its low nutritional value so I just shred romaine lettuce, turn it into a nest for the fabulous meat mixture and drizzle the hoisin on top so that it looks really fancy. Excellent!

    11. Yum! love this recipe - thanks! The other day I was in a produce store and picked up a bag of steam fried noodles to make this for dinner. The lady in front of me in the check out line commented about enjoying those noodles and I told her I was making lettuce wraps. She immediately was interested in how I made them. I just smiled and said - just google Mennonite Girls can Cook and search for lettuce wraps!

    13. I was wondering if you cooked the noodles before you add them to the meat mixture, or add them dry? Thanks

      1. Add the dry steam fried noodles and then cook for several minutes longer (noodles should still be crunchy).

      2. Thanks! I made this recipe yesterday and cooked the noodles first, which left them soggy, but it still tasted great!
        I was wondering if you serve this as a meal, or if you add any other dishes?

      3. I have served them as an appetizer for an Asian meal. We have also had them as the 'main course'. They are great any which way!
