Bread for the Journey

 I will be your God through all your lifetime, yes, even when your hair is white with age. I made you and I will care for you.
I will carry you along and be your Saviour.
Isaiah 46:4 TLB
~~~~~
I was privileged this past week to spend a brief holiday on Mayne Island with my sister and our Dad who is 91 now, and has been blessed with a long and healthy life.
It was the end of a beautiful day when he and I caught the ferry and we watched the sun go down on our way over to the Island. Janet was there to meet us and
we watched the stars come out one by one before going to bed.
 The next day the three of us had a leisurely breakfast on the deck and sat and talked for much of the morning as we watched the hummingbirds, the butterflies and bees among the flowers.
 We went to Bennett Bay, sat by the ocean and waded in the water, marveling at the intricacy and beauty of sea shells, the graceful gliding of the herons and the blueness of the sky.
After dinner we wandered through the Japanese Gardens and watched the seals and otters at play as the sun set on Dinner Bay.
Over and over again, Dad expressed his gratefulness to God.
...For the wonder of God's creation,
...For leading his parents to emigrate from the Ukraine and move to Canada
when he was 3 years old.
...For being blessed to live in such beautiful and peaceful place.
...For his family, his friends, his home and his health.
...For salvation and the assurance of eternal life.
He remembers how God led in good times and difficult times and
he lives in humble gratefulness for God's faithfulness to him.
He never hesitates to share his love for God with his children, his grandchildren and
now, his great grandchildren who love to visit their "Opa".
As I grow older, my prayer is that I too live with a grateful heart, proclaiming
 God's faithfulness to my children and grandchildren.
O God, you have taught me from my earliest childhood,
    and I constantly tell others about the wonderful things you do.
Now that I am old and gray,
do not abandon me, O God.
Let me proclaim your power to this new generation,
    your mighty miracles to all who come after me.
Psalm 71:17-18NLT
  1. What wonderful testimony to the grace, mercy, goodness and kindness of God. You are so blessed to have this time with your Dad. This is why my farm is for sale...I want to move closer to my parents and siblings while there's still time.
  2. Your dad is so blessed to have you wonderful girls who continue to love and honor him into his elder years. I have one son who has turned away from God and proclaimed himself an atheist. The other does not live a life that honors God. This makes the outlook on my elder years not nearly as wonderful and peaceful as that of your dad.
    1. Sherrill, I'd like to encourage you to not give up on your sons nor on God. He is the changer of hearts and minds and he loves them more than you do. His will is to turn even the most stubborn or unbelieving into His faithful followers. I'm adding my prayers to yours for you dear sons.
    2. Thank you, Bev, for this insightful answer to Sherrill. I have a similar situation where both of our children have turned away from God. It is a heartbreak, but I hold on to the knowledge that He is more heartbroken than I am at His children turning away from Him. My husband and I just pray for them and our grandchildren that they will at some point embrace Him again.
  3. This is beautiful Bev. What a testimony your Dad has and what a wonderful heritage you have. I can't help but think of my own Dad as I read this. God is faithful.
  6. The world we live in today is not the world our Godly parents grew up in. Jesus is coming soon though and it gives us all a great hope that soon, along with our Godly parents, we together will be living in His Holy Presence in that Land that is eternal day. May our Lord come quickly.
    1. Amen.
      I remember my Grandmother telling me that people had censured her for having children in the uncertain times of the Bolshevik revolution and anarchy that accompanied it. Her response was that God's Word instructed us to go on living and trusting Him until His return. When I see the evil in our world today, I too long for Christ's return. However He is able to keep us and sustain us and our families until that glorious day.
