Sparkling Watermelon Lemonade

It has been rather warm here lately and we have been enjoying watermelon in salads, for dessert and even in our drinks. A nice cold glass of watermelon lemonade on a hot day is the perfect refresher!

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 8 cups watermelon, cubed and seeded
  • 2/3 cups lemon juice (or juice from 2 large lemons)
  • crushed ice
  • Sprite (or other citrus flavored soda pop)

  1. Combine sugar and water in small saucepan.  Bring to boil, stirring to dissolve sugar.  Cool.
  2. Puree watermelon cubes in blender.
  3. Add fresh lemon juice.
  4. Strain watermelon/lemon puree.
  5. Add cooled sugar solution.
  6. Chill.
  7. Fill drinking glass with crushed ice.
  8. Pour watermelon lemonade over crushed ice until glass is about 3/4 full.
  9. Top with Sprite.
Yield: Two quarts of lemonade.

  7. This sounds delicious! Do you think the juice could be frozen? It would be a nice change over the winter.

  8. Not really very healthy-lots of added sugar and lots of soda sugar. I would change it to sparkling water and use stevia...sugar does NOT quench thirst and raises body temps in hot weather.

    1. Thanks for sharing your alternative method. Sparkling water is always an option...as are sugar substitutes.

    2. Nah, a glass with only 1/4 Sprite isn't all that much soda. It sounds a lot less sugary than lemonade fountain drinks. I have to add water to those to be able to drink them.

    4. Like the idea of water , but use a bit of honey as it is a natural sweetener and if you are dibetic it will work for you.
The picture if a beautiful one. Big thank you to whoever does those pictures!

  12. Sounds delicious. However, I am diabetic and a little afraid of the 'sugar' amount. Have you tried it without sugar or another sweetner alittle more friendly like honey? I am not a big fan of the artifical sweetners though.
Would love to know what you think.
    Thanks for the drink combo.

    1. Rebecca...I have not tried sugar substitutes of any kind, but I know those who are on sugar restricted diets would have to make adjustments. If you try a 'diabetic friendly' version of watermelon lemonade...let us know how it worked out for you.

  14. Judy , your photo is soo imaginative! Beautiful !! ... and I love the idea of watermelon in a drink. I just read a book - about the Mennonites in the Ukraine - and they made barrels of watermelon syrup... I'm sure they must have mixed the syrup in water for a drink.

  18. Riddled with sugar. Watermelon does not need to be drowned in sweeteners.
