Bread for the Journey

Early in August I stood in a glass walk way overlooking ground zero.
Watching the security. ..
the preparations for the memorial site and the surroundings. .
I wondered and tried to imagine . .
the suffering of those that found themselves trapped ..
those that watched in horror . .
the unspeakable grief that so many families were left with. . .  .
and those that continue to suffer the effects of being part of the rescue mission.

I don't know why God allows such things to happen but I know what the reason isn't. It is not because he doesn't love us.  He knows each of us and waits to comfort us.  In fact. . .God cares deeply about us and our suffering and  became involved when he sent his one and only son to come to earth as a wee baby.  As a man, he willingly took all of our sins upon himself and died that we might have life.

"For God so loved the world. .
that he gave his one and only son. .
that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life".
John 3:16

"See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;
your walls are ever before me."
Isaiah 49:16

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God."
2 Corinthians 1:3,4

Lord God Almighty,  I praise you and and thank you for the gift of your son Jesus.
I ask Lord,  that you draw near to those that are continuing to suffer in the aftermath of 9/11.  In a world where there is so little peace, I ask that you would show your great love and compassion to those that call out to you.  Help us to keep our eyes on you. You are the God of the universe and you hold everything together. Please hold us together and keep us from anxiety and panic. Go before us and lead us.  Thank you Lord for all the encouragement you send our way and help us to press on when things go bad.  Greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world! Help us to remember that we have you in us...the God of the universe.
Thank you Lord....we love you and are in awe of your love for us!
Amen!

  1. Thank you, Lovella. That was a precious prayer. I have been listening to some survival stories over the past few days and have marveled at how mighty God was to save and rescue, He reminded me that there will be some incredible "passing" stories of those who found their way directly into His arms. I've been pretty weepy since. Your prayer is comforting.

  2. Thank you for the reminder of God's love and mercy in the midst of evil. Our country was founded on God and people have been trying to push Him out..........He can never be pushed out as long as He lives in the lives of our citizens. May God remain in our country.

  4. Lovella, thank you for this message, and reminding us to seek the one true Answer, rather than looking all over the world for the answer to tragedy. It matters not what the corporeal body must endure, but that the soul is prepared for His calling. Yes, we can weep for those who lost their lives and comfort those left behind, but we must continue His work as well.

We can never understand evil. But we can be comforted in knowing that our Lord is always aware of every detail of our lives.
Thank you for your prayer and this reminder.

  6. Beautiful post, Lovella. 9-11 is a very sad day here and it takes me quite awhile to go forward after it. I do believe good can conquer evil. All good begins with us.

  7. This is beautiful.

It also spurs me to share a prayer my then-rector shared with us a decade ago...

Let us pray for those who do great harm:

Almighty God, whose will it is to place awesome power into the hearts, minds and hands of your children, let your care and our compassion be on those who do harm as well as those who are harmed. Lord, you reached across the limits of human understanding to embrace the outcast and the lost, reach now beyond our understanding and embrace those who have caused so much pain and death this day. We cannot but commend them to you for in our hearts are seeds of hatred and in our nostrils the stench of madness. As you touch them in your healing ways, Lord God, dry also the hate that could grow in us, smother the fear that would blind us and deliver us from the temptation to follow instincts that are far from the path you have set befor us. In the Name of the One we always hope to follow, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
