Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix

I find that I make more and more of my seasoning mixes from scratch, along with my salad dressings as well. There are so many allergies and intolerance to food and ingredients I would prefer to say that I know what goes into something. Plus have you ever checked and seen how much sodium is in a store bought Taco Mix? Yikes! This taste just like a store bought mix, with every day ingredients you likely have on hand but with out the sodium and ingredients you can't pronounce.

Low Sodium Taco Seasoning Mix

1/4 cup dry onion flakes
1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/4 cup of chili powder
1 tablespoon cumin
1 1/2 teaspoons oregano
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 tablespoons beef bouillon (I should mention I use a low sodium version, Ep*cure is my choice or omit all together if you are very strict with your sodium)

Combine all the ingredients in a jar and keep covered and store in a dry cool place.

  1. 2 Tablespoon of the mix are equal to 1 package of taco seasoning and enough for 1 pound of fried ground beef.
  2. Add 3/4 cup water for every 2 tablespoons.
  3. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. Use the meat in tacos, or taco salad.

  1. With the oregano, was that in tablespoons or cups?

  2. Good idea! I always try to leave the pre-made seasoning packets in the store...much healthier to make it yourself :). Thanks!

  3. It would make sense that it was in tablespoons but it wasn't listed and some young women who are just learning to cook may not know that oregano is a strong herb.

  6. Love this! I've been buying wholesale sized containers to cut down on cost, but it takes a while to get to the bottom of those!

  7. thanks for the recipe...
how would this work as a chili seasoning? I typically use prepackaged such as Wic Fowlers and leave out the salt...

  11. Barbara, I have used this as a chili seasoning as well, only then I add a another tablespoon of chili powder as well. I think you should adjust it to your personal taste.

  12. I am excited to try this. After finding maltodextrin in the ingredients of the last seasoning packet I bought, I have been looking for recipes. I don't need corn products in my seasoning mix!

  14. This is great! Those packages are tricky because the sodium they list is for 1/6 of a package, making the whole package close to 2000 mg. Be careful with your beef bouillon as well. Most store brands have close to 1000 or more mg. of sodium per cube (which is smaller than 1 Tbs.). Even brands like Watkins bouillon have really high sodium. Epicure Selections' bouillons are closer to 100 mg. of sodium per teaspoon, which is what you need to make 1 cup of broth.

  18. Could you post more like this? YOu mentioned you do some others, and salad dressing.

For example, I make my own chili powder: cumin, oregano, cayenne pepper and ancho pepper. I used to add dehydrated garlic, but it's just as easy and tastes better to use fresh and saute it with the recipe.

  20. I made three batches, 2 with Knorr's bouillon and 1 without onions or bouillon. I used it with taco meat tonight and it was excellent. I thought for sure it would be salty and it was not at all. Good flavor. I would also use this in a chili recipe as well.

    Thank you so much!

  21. I made a double batch of this and used 1/2 the beef bouillon suggested amount. It is a delcious mix that I've used on both beef and chicken. I also use it to season ground beef or ground turkey for chili.

  22. Do you use oregano leaves or ground oregano?
