Bread for the Journey

Psalm 139: 3 - 5 NIV

"You discern my going out and my lying down: you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord.
You hem me in behind and before, you have laid your hand upon me."

Recently I read this portion of scripture and these words spoke to me in a new way.  How amazing that God knows all about us and is familiar with our ways. He knows us so completely, even before a word is on our tongue. We cannot hide anything from him.

When you are claustrophobic, the feeling of being hemmed in does not sound comforting. But when I read verse 5, I find it very comforting to be hemmed in by God's love and care. This is a safe kind of being hemmed in, to know that we are in His constant presence, God will always be there for us and will never leave us.
