Ingredients:
- 2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups sharp Cheddar cheese, grated
- 1/2 cup butter, grated
- 1/2 cup ice-cold water
- Line several baking sheets with parchment paper (or grease).
- Combine flour, baking powder, cayenne pepper, salt, grated cheese and butter.
- Mix until well combined.
- Add water, a little at a time to form a stiff dough.
- On floured surface, roll out dough to about 1/4" thickness. (Work with half the pastry at a time.)
- Cut sticks into about 6" lengths, using a pizza cutter or sharp knife.
- Arrange pieces on the baking sheet.
- Bake at 350°F for 12-15 minutes, or until the straws are crisp and golden in colour.
- Yield: about 5 dozen straws.
Enjoy!
Oh boy! I know that the grands would love those!
ReplyDeleteI haven't thought of making cheese straws in years! They are so tasty...thanks for the reminder. I put twists in mine before baking, to be "fancy" :)
ReplyDeleteCould these be made ahead of time and stored in a ziplock bag? They would be great for a graduation party table.
ReplyDeleteThey freeze well...and are just like fresh when taken out of the freezer.
DeleteFrom the photo it almost looks like you put a shake of parmesan on them before you baked them or maybe coarse salt. Is that the case?
ReplyDeleteNo, I never coated them with anything. The grated cheese melts while baking, and oozes out to texture the 'straws'.
DeleteThese look fantastic! can't wait to try them!
ReplyDeleteYummy you Mennonite girls are a Blessing & I just love you sharing!!!
ReplyDeleteHello
ReplyDeleteThanks for the cheese straw recipe.
I'll create one for sure, my kids are gonna like it :)
If you don't mind, can you submit your cheese straw photo in http://www.foodporn.net ?
It's a food photography site full of all DIY food pictures from members around the world. Or perhaps you'd like to submit by yourself? Let me know when you did, so I can share it.
What a fun recipe!!
ReplyDeleteAll that work only to watch them disappear in a flash. Hopefully if I make them I will manage to get at least one:)
ReplyDeleteI would enjoy these. They look delicious. xo
ReplyDeleteWill these taste good with out the cayenne pepper? I don't use it.
ReplyDeleteThey look delicious and I would really like to try them. I think the
grandchildren (and adults) would like them.

Do you need to refrigerate them or can they store in a sealed bag or container on the counter?
ReplyDeleteNo need to refrigerate them...though I would freeze them if you don't plan to eat them within a few days.
DeleteI used to make cheese straws when I was little. I loved mashing all the ingredients together, rolling out the dough, cutting, baking and sharing them with my brother and cousins. Thanks for bringing to mind a wonderful memory and sharing your recipe! YUMMY!
ReplyDeletedo you serve them cold or warm (if made ahead how do u warm them)
ReplyDeleteI serve them cold...but they could be heated on a baking sheet in the oven for a few minutes, if you prefer them warm.
