Swiss Steak

When I think about Swiss Steak I remember one of the first meals I had at my MIL's house. She had made this meal with round steak and it was so delicious, she was an amazing cook.
This is a simple and inexpensive way to prepare round steak.
  • 1 round steak approx 1 inch thick
  • Flour
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1- 284 ml/10 oz can of tomato soup
  • Milk, same amount as tomato soup
  1. Pound the round steak with a mallet on both sides until it's about 1/2 inch thick.
  2. Dredge steak in flour and sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Pour a little oil in a frying pan and brown both sides of the steak. Place browned steaks in a roaster.
  4. Empty can of tomato soup into a bowl and fill can with milk, add to the tomato soup and whisk until well blended.
  5. Pour over steaks, cover roaster and bake in a 350ยบ oven for 1 hour and 45 minutes.
  6. I served this steak with mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, and a fresh garden salad.
  7. Serves: 4

  11. this gravy looks so nice and brown in the picture. Do I seriously only use tomato soup and milk???

  12. Lorrie..yes you use only tomato soup and milk..it browns up a bit while baking. If you want to brown it up more you could pour the tomato soup and milk into the pan that you browned the steak in, mix that well, then pour it over the steak and bake.
