Four Layer Chocolate Dessert

This creamy dessert has been around for years. It's a perfect dessert to serve evening company or take to a potluck dinner.

Layer #1
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped pecans or almonds (optional)
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
Mix together with a fork and press into a 9x13 pan. Bake @350ยบ for 14 minutes. Cool.

Layer #2
  • 1- 8 oz package cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 2/3 cup powdered sugar
  • 2/3 cup whipped cream (or cool whip)
Beat together well and spread over cooled crust.

Layer #3
  • 1 large package instant chocolate pudding
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 tbsp instant coffee granules (optional)
Beat together until mixture thickens. Pour over cream cheese layer.

Layer #4
  • 2 cups whipping cream
  • 2 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
Whip cream until it begins to thicken. Add sugar and vanilla and whip. Spread over pudding layer. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Best served within 24 hours. A 9x13 serves 12.

To garnish: grate chocolate over the whipped cream.

  5. Sandy, you can make this using a graham crust. I also have a must allergy and have to pass on anything with nuts, so I just try it. Kathy

  6. Yes, this recipe, or variations of it and variations of its name have been around for a long time. But, it sure is a favourite!! I have never had it with instant coffee in it, I would love that!! Thanks! I'm glad that you girls post some new things and some of the old stand-bys!

  9. Oh, how I love this recipe! We call it "Weight-Watcher's Delight", which always makes people think it's healthy, but, no, it's just what Weight-Watchers WANT to eat!

  11. Thinking here that one could also divide this into individual serving glasses/or fancy teacups right away - a favorite cookie (or broken cookies) on the bottom and then the 3 layers, shaved chocolate curls on top or toasted nuts and voila - an elegant dessert! It's delish!!

  15. We used to call this, "The next best thing to (fill in the blank with your sweethearts name)".
    It is also good with 2 layers of pudding like vanilla and chocolate or just lemon... Nobody can resist this rich dessert, or seconds.
    I have enjoyed so many of the recipes you ladies post.

  16. If you are cooking for someone who must limit their carbohydrate and/or fat content:
    -Try substituting sugar-free pudding for the regular;
    -Use Splenda (granulated) instead of powdered sugar;
    -Omit the sugar in the crust; and
    -Consider trying lower fat cream cheese or Cool whip.
    And if you sprinkle a few mini chocolate chips or chocolate sprinkles on the top, they add negligible carbs but lot of eye appeal!
