If you like Puff Wheat Squares, you are going to love these.
I got the recipe from the cook book "The Best of The Best and More" from the Best of Bridge Collection.I tripled the recipe to serve a whole bunch of young people and it made two big cookie sheets. One recipe is usually sufficient for a family and a few friends. It makes a 9 x 13 inch pan.
- 1/2 cup butter or hard margerine (I like using butter)
- 1 cup corn syrup
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 6 heaping tbsp. cocoa powder
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 10 cups of puffed wheat (not found in the cereal isle at Super St*re but by the baking supplies like chocolate chips and nuts etc.)
- Combine butter, corn syrup, sugars and cocoa powder in a heavy saucepan.
- Bring to a boil. (Very important) Stir constantly on a low boil for 2 minutes.
- Remove from heat and add vanilla.
- In a large bowl pour mixture over puffed wheat.
- Mix well and press into a greased 9 x 13 pan.
- Wet hands work better than greased hands to handle the stickiness so just moisten them with a bit of water.
Thanks for sharing another wonderful treat with us.
ReplyDeleteAdd 1 cup of mimi marshmallows, if you over boiled will keep them soft and chewy if you under boiled will hold it together...just add after mixture has boiled.
DeleteYou can also add marshmallows if you only have regular syrup.
DeleteMmmm... I haven't seen Puff Wheat squares for years! Thanks for reminding us of this very tasty treat!

DeleteThis classic is still always one of my favorites!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the posting.

Step No. 7 is the truth - if I started "sampling" these, I'd never stop!
ReplyDeleteIsn't funny how we move on to recipes and forget the ones we love like puffed wheat squares. I used to make these with my grandma. I don't remember any other way to eat puffed wheat!!
ReplyDeleteA girlfriend of mine absolutely loves these, Now I have the recipe and can make them for her.
ReplyDeleteMy mom used to make these. Thanks for the the recipe. Will be putting in the to try pile.
ReplyDeleteHaha Charlotte,
ReplyDeleteAre you agreeing that you shared a wonderful treat with us today with your comment?
This is such a good childhood memory recipe....
This is one of my many favorite treats.OK,maybe most sweet stuff is a favorite of mine.:)
ReplyDeleteBlessings,Ruth
This is still my favorite. My mom made it every weekend. It was such a treat and affordable.
ReplyDeleteSomewhere I have the recipe scratched on a piece of paper, hoping to never loose it...but now "No fear" It's in the blog.
I always have trouble remembering where my recipe for Puffed wheat squares is - another of those "scribbled on a paper somewhere" recipes. Now I'll just come here.
ReplyDeletethanks!
Oh my word - these squares and the last post of that caramel apple cake - wow and double wow! I just LOVE it here. I've never had Puffed Wheat, have I? I'm not sure what it is but I'll check in the baking aisle. Thanks for sharing - these look awesome ~ ♥
ReplyDeleteThese are one of my most favorite squares. Eat as a square or as a nibbley snack. Yummy!!!
ReplyDeleteCheryl
I have never seen this. Sounds different and delicious!
ReplyDeleteMy mom could never make puff wheat cake to save her life, so she never did. I may have to buy some (too bad they come in such a huge bag! I'll be eating puff wheat for months!) just to try & see if I have better luck than she did...Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI do not think I have had this before and will have to make them when my grand children come to visit. Thanks for a new recipe to try!
ReplyDeleteOh Charlotte...I am so in need of some comfort and memory food....grin...so I am making this tonight. Oh how I remember my mom making this and then my sister as she grew older...she'd make this for us kids to snack on.! Love it. Here's hoping I can make it stick together...'candy' making is NOT my skillset for sure!
ReplyDeleteThis looks good. I hope to treat myself to it very soon in my kitchen!
ReplyDeleteThis looks dangerously delicious (dangerous for my diet) haha. I've never had puffed wheat squares, only rice krispie squares. This looks great.
ReplyDeleteThis is a hit at our place. A few weeks back I made 3 pans to send with the guys fishing....one pan for each day...at their request. I'm like Bev, always in search for this recipe. Now it's just a click away. Kathy
ReplyDeleteI love these squares. I reduce the sugar and add some marshmallows for extra gooey-ness!
ReplyDeleteThat's funny...I just made some last weekend. My girls and I LOVE them!
ReplyDeleteI just love your blog. I check it daily and have tried a few of the recipes with good results. Thank you so much for sharing.
If you have a recipe for Lebkuchen you would like to share, I would be soooo happy. It was something I had years ago and remember it being so yummy.
Yum....I made these this week and they were so good I posted pics of them and a link back here. Thanks Char....memories and sweetness intermingled when I needed it most.
ReplyDeletehttp://themadchemist-trish.blogspot.com/2009/10/chocolate-puff-wheat-cake-good-old.html
How timely! I just "inherited" a very large bag of puffed wheat. Just wondering, can I use chocolate chips instead of the cocoa?
ReplyDeleteThese are best puffed wheat squares that I have ever tried. No need to try others. I stored the entire pan in an x-large ziplock bag. It was three days ago and they are still as fresh as the first day. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteTo make them more tasty substitute honey for corn syrup..mmmmmmmm
ReplyDeleteTo smooth or pack anything that is sticky I save the wax/plastic cereal bags, open them up, lay the sheet over the gooey stuff and press. No butter, water or even hand washing after the fact required. Mom's never stuck together but it all came from cutting back on some of that good stuff to make it gooey. I like insurance so that any recipe like this that I want to save I print and file in a ring binder just in case my computer is ornery when I want to make something.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! This is awesome! I usually make my mom's old recipe fairly often and it is enjoyed by all but this, I'm not sure anyone but me will get any! I usually try (quite haphazardly) adding extra of all the ingredients to make mine more gooey. No need for that with this recipe, it is gooey and so delicious! I actually didnt have vanilla bc I forgot to buy today and it was still to die for. I'm only sending a review to stop me from having ANOTHER piece. Lol thanks sooo much.
ReplyDeleteI made this today. It was pretty good! Almost as good as my fav cafe.. with a little tweaking it will be perfect! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteJust made these & they are soooo yummy! I only added the puffed wheat cup by cup as I like mine to be on the gooey side. Glad I did as I only needed 8 cups of puffed wheat to get the gooey-ness we love! I also cheated and lined my pan with parchment paper & used parchment paper to press down too.
ReplyDeleteI made these a few days ago and they are delicious!!! I'm just wondering if they are freezable?
ReplyDeleteyes they are freezable, but mine never last long enough to get to the freezer :)
DeleteI just made these but with Rice Puffs instead because my son can't have wheat. They still taste great!!
ReplyDelete--Heather.
Hi just found this site and enjoy looking and trying the recipes .. i tryed the chococolate puff wheat and i am have trouble with it setting or sticking together what did i do wrong hlp me please and thank you
ReplyDeleteAnonymous... it's difficult to take a guess but I would check all of the ingredients again... such as, make sure you used corn syrup, not pancake syrup, the right amount of wheat puffs, etc.
ReplyDeleteHope it goes well next time.
Good day to all
ReplyDeleteI would like to know what 2 stick's of butter = to in cup's .
Thank you for your help
Brenda
ReplyDelete1 stick of butter or margarine = 1/2 cup.
these are awesome! 61 years old and haven't had them for 45years! delicious' easy to make and affordable, thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteThis was an epic fail. :(
ReplyDeletetrue fail
DeleteI boil till the softball stage with a candy thermometer and it works every time.
DeleteFor some reason the printer version link is not working. Could you please check into it. Thanks. Looking forward to making it.
ReplyDeleteI work at superstore and puffed wheat is actually found in the cereal isle.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely delicious! Thank you for sharing
ReplyDeleteIf you melt the butter first the other ingredients are easier to mix in. Also, I line my pan with parchment paper and then I put a piece of parchment on top when I am pressing it down. Not quite as messy! Great recipe, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI love these, and my husband and I are both from large families so these were an economical treat. I found some puff wheat at the store and was immediately taken back to when I was a kid. Thank you for the recipe.
ReplyDeleteCame across this recipe today and had to try them! LOVE LOVE LOVE puffed wheat cake! This is a great recipe, and I did add abit more cocoa as I like a darker puffed wheat square! (but that's just me!) Thanks for sharing ;o)
ReplyDeleteI don't bake haha I wanted to be sweet and surprise my boyfriend with some baking, They turned out awesome :) I doubled the recipe and put less puffed wheat in and they turned out ooey gooey for sure!! Thanks :D
ReplyDeleteSooooo yummy!
ReplyDeleteOh Great! Thought I would never find this again, one of those recipes you make from memory all the time, thinking you'd never forget it, I did! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI've made these twice-each time following the recipe exactly. The first time they were excellent. The second time the cake didn't stick together at all and I had to throw it out.
ReplyDeleteAnd, yes, I had planned to serve them to company. One of our guests said she'd also made puffed wheat cake using the recipe from MGCC and they also didn't stick together at all.
Isn't that frustrating when you make something, once it turns out and the next time it doesn't? I really can't explain why that happens. I fortunately have not had that happen to me with this recipe, but something as simple as Rice Krispee squares it has, go figure. Is it the type of marshmallow that we use, who knows. Better luck next time.
DeleteI think it's the time you boil it for... like in candy making...
DeleteI was even able to adapt these to use splenda white and brown sugar, and light corn syrup, still taste yummy Not totally sugar free but close enough for me to enjoy.
ReplyDeleteEpic WIN! Thanks for the recipe - I feel like a kid again! I even made it in my Grandma's (who is 97) vintage cake pan (I think she got it new!). Happiness is...
ReplyDeleteHappiness is biting down on these, oh so delicious, delectable, sweet tooth satisfying squares while remembering how scrumptious they were as a child when my Mom would make them for the Family from that monstrous bag of puffed wheat.
ReplyDeleteI love them as much today as I did when I first tasted them back in the 1950's. Good things don't always come in small packages.
Thank you for sharing. My husband actually told me to make more, this rarely happens.... didn't even reck a pot....lol.
ReplyDeleteskipped the white sugar and used all brown and kamut puffs instead of the wheat puffs. LOVE!!
ReplyDeleteI lost my puffed wheat recipe and found yours, it is much better! I also modified your recipe out of necessity...I was almost out of cocoa powder so I used 1 tablespoon of powder and half a cup of chocolate syrup. They are great!
ReplyDeleteI just made these with 1/2 the white sugar in Splenda and the brown sugar was Splenda too,so hopefully they taste good? I'll let you know when they are chilled and ready to eat.
ReplyDeleteI have made these a few times and they are great. I modified it slightly and used more brown sugar and less white sugar, however, sugars still equaled the amount noted iin the recipe. These are very addicting....lol
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to try this recipe! Thanks Charlotte !
ReplyDeleteMade a pan last week and just finished making more. this recipe is by far the best of the others I have tried. They are fantastic
ReplyDeletePuffed Wheat Squares are my favorite late night snacks, warm them up in the microwave for 30 seconds, then eat the yumminess! Also, add molasses for extra taste if wanted
ReplyDeleteThis recipe is the best one I've come across for these awesome squares... definitely a family favourite... I also make this for the labour/delivery maternity ward at our hospital as a treat for the nurses and doctors.. my daughter in law works there and they really appreciate the snacks for their break times... I recommend this to everyone who
ReplyDeleteenjoys a treat once in a while....
How long do you have to boil it for?
ReplyDeleteJust tried this recipe and it's excellent. My biggest problem is hiding them before my kids get home or they will inhale them! Thank you.
ReplyDeleteTurned out perfect, not too soft & not too hard. Very rich cocoa flavour too. Thanks so much for posted this recipe!
ReplyDeleteIs there a recepe for puff wheat made with chocolate chips?
ReplyDeleteThis can easily be made as a gluten free treat by using rice puffs instead of puffed wheat. One bag (170g) of Nature's Path rice puffs makes one recipe. Don't use Rice Krispies - they don't work.
ReplyDeleteThese are amazing! Everyone else I know makes a more caramel-ish version, not nearly enough chocolate. These are perfect!
ReplyDeleteThese are the best. I have made theses about 10 times and everyone that eats one loves them also. The only thing I do different is instead of 1/2 cups of butter I use 1/2 cups plus 3 TBSP of butter
