Finger Jello

Gelatin is, more often than not, thought to be just a fun food for kids, but we may need a little reminder that it's also a source of protein and good for our bones, muscles and skin. My sister, Monika, makes the best finger friendly jello I've ever had and when I asked her the secret, she basically told me it's four, four and four. Try this recipe and enjoy the feeling of being a kid again.

Ingredients:

  • 4 small (3 oz) pkgs Jello - 4 colors if you like
  • 4 pouches (1 box) Knox Gelatine (unflavored)
  • 4 cups boiling water

Method for Rainbow Finger Jello:

  1. Mix 1 packet of gelatine with 1 package of Jello well.
  2. Add 1 cup boiling water, stirring until well dissolved.
  3. Pour into small (not larger than 8X8) glass pan.
  4. Refrigerate until set, then repeat with the next layers.
It doesn't take long to set each layer. Cut up and enjoy. It's very easy to handle and doesn't leave your fingers sticky. You can also use sugar free Jello.

  7. Oh Anneliese, this brings back memories of a trip to Palm Springs with our kids. Finger Jello and Ham and Cheese pinwheels were our picnic - what fun the kids had luring the seagulls and then watching their reaction to the finger jello!

  9. I always made this for the kids. I would use a small heart cookie cutter for Valentine's Day, shamrock for St. Pat's Day, etc. It was such fun for the kids and I loved it too. Wonderful treat for toddlers because it is not messy.

  11. Hi
How long do u have to wait for the layer to set before adding the next layer? If you wait to long will the layers not stick to each other?

  12. Hi anonymous,
I just wait until it feels solid - doesn't take long, maybe 15 - 30 min. but if you wait longer, it won't matter. The next layer will be hot and will kind of gell right into the one beheath it, if that makes sense.

  16. How funny! I was thinking about jigglers this morning...who know where the thought came from, it has been years and years since I made it, and I was thinking "I'll have to look up the directions" and BOOM, here it is.

As some types would say: The Universe Conspires to Bring Us What We Desire.

Why this doesn't work for more serious concerns, I can't imagine....(grin)

  22. I had forgotten about this snack we used to eat as kids. We called them Knox Blocks and used Kool-Aid packages and bumped up the number of Knox packages, but it was the same idea.

Another benefit? My toddler with food allergies could eat these too. :-D

  24. BK, just because we like it doesn't mean we don't know where it comes from. Geez.

  25. A former co-worker used to make this and bring it to work, but she alternated the colored layers with a white layer. I'm trying to figure out what that was. I think it was gelatine with sweetened consensed milk. It made the colors more visible and distinct, and was very pretty this way.
