Bread for the Journey

Once again, this is one of those times I did not see until after the photos were on my computer, what was actually happening in this photo. I thought he was simply blowing out his candles, and then I saw something else - his seven year old sister, gently holding back his hand - without him even noticing.

I kept thinking on that image and how it may be a picture of God's hand
lovingly holding us back to protect us.
Just as our human hand can convey a loving touch, sympathy, protection or help,
God's hands speak of protection, healing and guidance.

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand delivers me.
Psalm 138:7

"Do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you.  Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand."
Isaiah 41:10

If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.
Psalm 139:9,10
For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.
Isaiah 41:13

I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.
John 10:28
I pray these words from scripture encourage and bless you today.
May you sense the hand of God
whether it be as a comfort,
holding you back to protect you
or guiding and empowering you in the way you should go.

  1. The picture...the very meaningful especially to me first thing this morning in an overwhelming week -being pressed many ways...thank you for sharing the Lord in this has ministered to me and I will come back to this all week.

  2. Ohh.. beautiful, Anneliese ! God's protective hand ...oft we are not even aware !

I also thought, seeing the words on the birthday boy's shirt .. "Are we there yet?" ...that we often need God's hand to hold us back when we want to rush ahead , impatient with His timing.

  3. I needed that today Anneliese. I am going through some health issues and it seems that God meant that for me. God Bless you and keep you,

  4. How awesome God is to give us these pictures so that we can glimpse his loving hands on our lives. It is a beautiful thought and one that we need. One day at a time, with God's hand on my life.

  5. So every way!

  6. How sweet! In our 2 year old granddaughter's candles pictures I had my hand on her back and I was telling her to lean forward because her breath was going high over the cake. My family says it looks like I am trying to smash her face into her cake.

  7. A beautiful picture of sibling love.

  8. I was so blessed by your post. The verse Psalm 138:7 has so much meaning for me personally. As I was reading it, I realized that I am celebrating 25 years cancer-free this year. HE "preserves my life!

  9. Thank you for this lovely sweet post. It came at time when needed. How blessed to be in the Lords hand...

  10. Stumbled upon your blog via another site, but God's timing is always perfect. I was particularly drawn to Psalm 139:9,10 -- I am an expat living overseas. I think I will print and frame this scripture as a daily reminder....thanks so much.....
