Date Balls

These are a no bake easy treat and if you buy gluten free Rice Krispies cereal they are a gluten free treat!

Date Balls

  • 1 pound dates, chopped
  • 1/2 Cup butter
  • 1 Cup sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 4 cups Rice Krispies
  • 1 cup walnuts, chopped (you can substitute pecans)
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
Method:
  1. Combine dates, butter, sugar, and beaten egg in a saucepan.
  2. Cook on medium heat for 10 minutes.
  3. Turn down heat if necessary after 5 minutes.
  4. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking or burning.
  5. Remove from heat and add vanilla.
  6. In a large bowl, mix the Rice Krispies and chopped nuts.
  7. Pour date mixture over cereal mixture.
  8. Stir and let Cool.
  9. Roll into balls a little larger than a walnut.

  1. A childhood memory. My mother would make these at Christmas, but roll them in coconut. They make a healthy treat when you want a little something sweet.

  3. I always add marachino cherries in the date mixture. Yummy! One of our family's favorites!

  4. I, too, have loved them since childhood. My aunts made gift boxes of goodies when money was too tight for individual gifts. I love making them...just like your recipe.

  6. Oh these are just like my grandmother's recipe. I took these out after years and years of being in my memory book (the only thing I own that is in her actual handwriting!) and made them for Christmas gifts. I got calls from people wanting to know what it was and would I make more. LOL You brought back fond memories with this post. Thank you!

  8. As a child in my Altona kindergarten class, we had a visitor one day who brought these. I recall that she had been a missionary in India. While dressed in a sari she handing these out and explained among other things, that they ate a lot of rice in India.
Quite an exotic moment in 1971. I'll have to try these out to see if I like them as much the second time around.

  9. I have found them hard to roll. They keep falling apart. I don't think I have quite enough of the sticky liquid. I will try melting a little more sugar and butter and adding that. They taste absolutely wonderful.

  10. So, melting more sugar and butter didn't work. I was able to roll most of the batter, but I don't think it's supposed to be quite as much of a workout for your hands. :) Another time, I will put in 3 cups of rice crispies, and add more from there if necessary, once the rest of the wet ingredients are added. On a side note, it is also difficult to keep the husband from stealing them as they are made.
