Butterscotch Brownies

These bars are a 'flash from the past'...a recipe that was baked often in my childhood home.  Since my dad was not all that fond of chocolate, our brownies were more often than not 'blonde'!  Moist and delicious...they make a great lunch-box treat.
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  1. Combine brown sugar and melted butter in mixing bowl and stir smooth. Cool slightly.
  2. Beat in eggs and vanilla.
  3. Stir in flour, baking powder, salt and chopped nuts.
  4. Spread batter evenly in greased 9"x13" pan.
  5. Bake in pre-heated 325° oven for 25-30 minutes or until set.
  6. Cool before cutting into bars.
  7. Sprinkle with icing sugar (powdered sugar) before serving.

    1. I like to line the pan with parchment paper and then remove the entire slab of baked bars to a cutting board for easier slicing. I use a very sharp large knife or my heavy-duty pizza cutter.

    1. Yes, it is. Sorry, I always forget that it is not called 'icing sugar' in the USA. I will edit to add that.

  8. Thanks for sharing this recipe. Just a quick question, recipe name is butterscotch brownies, is there any butterscotch added like butterscotch chips?

    1. There are no added chips. Butterscotch is the flavour made when combining brown sugar and melted butter.
