Monte Cristo Sandwich

I could have made a plain ham and chicken sandwich from the Easter leftovers and it would have been very good but I thought I'd take it to another level. I enjoyed this sandwich at a restaurant some time ago and it looked simple enough to make at home. I wasn't sure of all these flavors together but since I love sweet and savoury I really wanted to try it.
  • 4 slices bread, white or whole wheat
  • Honey Dijon mustard or regular mustard
  • 4 thin slices baked ham
  • 4 thin slices roasted chicken
  • 4 thin slices of Swiss cheese
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 2 teaspoons melted butter
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • Icing sugar to dust the sandwiches
  • Raspberry jam for dipping
1. Thinly spread each slice with mustard.
2. Layer between 2 slices of bread, a slice of cheese, ham, chicken, and then another slice of cheese.
3. Repeat with other 2 slices of bread.
4. Whisk eggs, milk, melted butter, salt and pepper.
5. Dip both sides of the sandwich in egg mixture until the bread is lightly soaked.
6. Place on 350ยบ preheated grill sprayed with a bit of oil or you may use a frying pan on the stove. Drizzle any remaining egg mixture over the top of the sandwich.
7. Fry until golden brown 5 to 6 minutes on each side. Cover sandwich for the last minute to melt cheese.
8. Serve warm dusted with powdered sugar and make sure to dip the sandwich in raspberry jam before each bite, it is delicious.

Another great way to use up leftover ham and chicken.

  1. My mom is talented in using leftovers to make delicious meals. I have been the fortunate recipient of this wonderful gift of hers for many years and she still has the knack. Way to go Mom!

  5. My husband just had a Monte Cristo sandwhich at the resteraunt we went to! I had a bite and it was yummy! It had to have been deep fried though. It had a crispy batter on the outside almost like fried chicken has. Anyway, I'll have to try this because he loves them!

  7. Betty, this is one of my favorite sandwiches of all time. I've made it at home as well, but let's just say that yours looks a whole lot more appetizing and pretty than mine. I'm going to have to do these again. Well done, my friend.

  9. We cheat a little to make this.

When I make french toast, I make extra for the kids to re-heat in the toaster or for Mockty Christos.

    2 pcs. French toast
    1-2 slices ham
    1-2 slices chicken or turkey
    1 slice swiss cheese
    1/2 tsp. mustard of choice
    1 tbls (or less) butter

Assemble a sandwich: spread mustard on one piece of ft, top with meats and cheese and other slice of ft. Butter outside of sandwich.
Grill in frying pan at medium heat until cheese melts and outside is golden (like a toasted cheese sandwich).
Serve lightly sprinkled with powdered sugar and a dollop of berry jam.
