She taught my Mom how to make Giesso. It was a rice dish with chopped carrots and potatoes and hamburger. I now make it with fresh sauteed garlic, onion, celery, carrots, potatoes and ground Chuck. It's delicious and brings back memories of my Mom's cooking. It's definitely a good comfort food.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13738383782316241633noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6454531829676162260.post-5353940947176611092018-12-18T20:07:47.060-08:002018-12-18T20:07:47.060-08:00So glad to find this recipe here...I had lost mine...So glad to find this recipe here...I had lost mine and this is one of my favorite cookies!! Our first experience with this version of peppernuts went like this.....One day the kindly spinster Mennonite sisters from across the road called and asked if my new husband and I would like some peppernuts for our first Christmas together. We excitedly agreed and eagerly awaited the arrival of our favourite Christmas treats. After working all day, my husband & I came home and found a tin on the doorstep. We quickly opened it up and our faces fell as we figured they had decided to bring up treats for our dog instead. It wasn't until we talked to my MIL that I realized this was what most Mennonites think of when they talk of peppernuts. They were SO delicious! My daughter and granddaughter were here and we sat down to some tea and buns. It got so quiet and when we looked over at Noa, she had her cheeks stuffed full and was eyeing my unfinished bun. We burst out laughing at the sight. I think you could say they were a hit or maybe even a homerun! At the height of summer, we'd all get together for a pool party and have watermelon and "krullers", as we'd call them. I was 3 y.o., and they'd let me help cut them out and dust them with powdered sugar. They were so good. I miss this tradition.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6454531829676162260.post-91978908514158077422018-10-31T14:33:52.502-07:002018-10-31T14:33:52.502-07:00Can I use quick oats instead of rolled oats? Can I use quick oats instead of rolled oats?Cherylhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13951336440912684671noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6454531829676162260.post-37496458999797966402018-10-29T15:41:51.070-07:002018-10-29T15:41:51.070-07:00Can I use apples in this same way?
