Trifle in a Mug



 
This simple Black Forest trifle in a mug is sure to go quick . . . but if not, rather than being left with a messy bowl, you have dessert for another day. These keep well, refrigerated, for several days.

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 4 Tbsp baking cocoa
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla

  • 1 can cherry pie filling
  • 1 small pkg instant chocolate fudge pudding
  • 2 cups milk for pudding
  • 2 cups whipping cream
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • chocolate shavings or mint candy, crushed

Method:
 
  1. Prepare a large rimmed cookie sheet (11x17) by greasing, lining with wax paper and greasing again.
  2.  Bring water, butter and oil to boil.
  3. Add hot liquids to combined flour, sugar, cocoa, soda in bowl.
  4. Stir in buttermilk, eggs and vanilla.
  5. Spread into prepared pan and bake at 350 F for 20 minutes.
  6. After cooling, cut out 24 rounds with cookie cutter or glass to fit mugs or small jars.
  7. Place a round of chocolate cake in the bottom of 12 mugs.
  8. Top with two tablespoons of cherry pie filling.
  9. Beat whipping cream with sugar, then top cherry filling with two tablespoons of whipped cream.
  10. Top whipped cream with second layer of cake, then add two - three tablespoons of prepared chocolate fudge pudding.
  11. Top with whipped cream and chocolate or mint. To make chocolate shavings use a potato peeler on semi sweet dark chocolate.

  1. Okay, why didn't I ever think of that? I never serve trifle, because I always feel sorry for everyone after the second person that starts digging into that big bowl. Trifles always look a mess. But not in this format! Way to go Anneliese!

  4. For a quick alternative I've done this using "Two Bite Brownies" - I just break them up slightly when putting them into the mug so to absorb all that whipped cream goodness!

  5. Lovely! My son was just telling me this morning about how he loves Black Forest Cake! Will definitely try this. Here's a question that makes me feel like a rookie ... is it okay to use wax paper in the oven? I always thought that was a no-no, but parchment is okay.

    1. Wax paper is what my mother always used before there was parchment paper... or maybe it was just more economical. I never saw parchment paper in her kitchen growing up. To answer your question ... It's good to go when you grease the pan and the paper... I still prefer it for certain appplications... When you bake a jelly roll or a cake that you want to flip out of the pan to decorate ... the wax paper peels off very nicely. .. although in this recipe it would not matter. You could probably just grease the pan.

    2. I should add that wax paper is not suitable for lining a pan on which you would grill sandwiches or bake cookies on ... it's only good for when it's covered with batter. I hope that makes sense.

  7. I used this idea today! I made 24 of them in large clear plastic disposable cups. Twelve went along with my kids to a pot-luck sledding party and the other 12 we took to our home group tonight. Both events, loved them! So nice, to make ahead and then no clean up later.
